Thousands of car owners face fines: inspections of maintenance, insurance and road tax

WITH large fines will soon encounter thousands of car ownerssince proposed by parliament bill provides for the introduction of electronic cross checks to identify uninsured vehicles, those who have not passed an MOT, and those who have not paid tolls.

The bill also provides for fines for non-operational vehicles and makes changes to the system of fines for late payment of road tax. Inspections will be carried out every six months, and if violations are found, vehicle owners will be notified and fined: by 1,000 euros for city buses and minibuses, by 500 euros for passenger and other vehicles and by 250 euros for two-wheelers.

For those who have road tax debt is at least one year, an appropriate fine will be assessed. In case of late payment, fines will be accrued in stages: 25% of the fine amount if paid in January of the following year, 50% if paid in February and 100% if paid after the end of February.

If the vehicle does not pass inspection within the prescribed period, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport imposes a fine. Once a violation has been established, a new electronic audit will be conducted at intervals of 3 to 12 months.

If the owner does not comply with the requirementsregistration certificate and license plates will be confiscated and returned only upon presentation of the relevant insurance policy, MOT card (KTEO) or road tax certificate, as well as proof of payment of the fine.

Vehicles that were not insured, had not undergone maintenance or their owners had not paid the registration fee over the past 7 years, are transferred to a temporary inactive state. Owners of such vehicles are notified of the need to proceed with permanent inactivation, deregistration or immobilization, or take the necessary measures to return them to circulation.

If a vehicle declared immobilized is found to be in circulation or parked in a location other than declared, the immobilization will be lifted and the AADE will impose a fine of 10,000 euros in addition to tolls and fines for non-payment.

Control is carried out through the issuance of a control order or electronic cross-checks carried out by AADE with the assistance of highway concessionaires and with the help of special application for cameras that scan license plates.

The new system will use various government databases to identify violations, using information from the AADE, the Ministries of Infrastructure and Transport, Citizen Protection, Interior, Immigration and Asylum, the Association of Insurance Companies, the Provident Fund Register of Insured Vehicles, the Greek Alternative Transport Authority and Taxisnet .
