Bilateral Agreement between the Government of Greece and the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt on Recruitment seasonal workers in the agricultural sector has come into force and therefore after the illegal immigrants they come with the permission of the government.
The agreement provides for a special procedure for inviting third-country nationals for seasonal work in the agricultural sector. The procedure provides for the first implementation (2024) of inviting five thousand (5,000) seasonal workers from among Egyptian citizens. The differences between the bilateral agreement procedure and the standard recruitment procedure are as follows:
- workers are distributed throughout Greece from a common “pool” and are engaged by a “one-stop shop” service in the process of processing the request;
- the general pool of candidate employees, from which the employer has the opportunity to recall workers, is formed and proposed by the Egyptian side in accordance with the criteria established by the Greek authorities (Ministry of Rural Development and Food).
The Ministry of Immigration and Asylum, as part of the implementation of the agreement, has developed an electronic platform for employers to submit applications. It will be available on the Department of Immigration and Asylum website from 10 June and employers will be able to submit their applications.
