Greece is preparing for a heat wave: 44°C and African dust expected from Monday

Meteorologists are warning of a “temperature fire” and calling for preparations for a heat wave coming to Greece from Algeria, Tunisia and Libya.

They call on citizens to take the necessary measures in view of the impending extreme temperatures. On weekends the temperature will drop slightly and will be 34-36°C. However From Monday, a warm air mass will arrive from Africa, which will raise the temperature above 40°C, in some places it can reach 44°C. The heat wave will peak on Wednesday, meteorologist and New Democracy MP Yiannis Kallianos wrote in a post.

This wave will come to our country from Africa, its duration remains unknown, but, according to the meteorologist, temperature will exceed 41-42°C and reach 43-44°C on heat-sensitive plains. He warns quotes CNN Greece:

“Prepare slowly because from next Tuesday, June 11, we will be affected by a strong heat wave coming from Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. It looks like this heat wave will peak on Wednesday, June 12th. Its duration is still unknown, since the models have not yet “lined up” into a single scenario regarding the duration.

Although the forecast situation is still not entirely clear, and with some data subject to change, temperatures are expected to exceed 41-42°C during this heatwave and reach 43-44°C in heat-sensitive low-lying areas. Currently, no one can say with certainty whether the mercury will reach 44°C or even exceed 44°C. On Sunday, I think, the forecast picture will become completely clear.

Please sincerely allow our fellow vulnerable groups, the elderly, parents, to prepare to take appropriate measures as they would for their young children and of course to take care of our animals, especially the strays.

All government agencies must be prepared. Mayors should start preparing to have air-conditioned facilities for everyone, and overall we are fully prepared. We must be careful and equipped to cope. Let's be ready for something strong and let something weaker come. I would like this wave to come more weakened. Detailed information will appear in the coming days.”

The Ministry of Labor and Social Security recommends ten measures to protect workers from heat in a circular published on June 3 on the prevention of heat stress among workers during the summer. With these measures, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection aims to protect the health and safety of workers during the summer months. Preventing Heat Stress:

  1. Breaks: Organizing working hours by scheduling breaks of appropriate duration to reduce workers' heat stress.
  2. Work planning: If possible, perform work involving high heat loads during off-peak hours.
  3. Reduction or cessation of occupancy in thermally stressed areassuch as machine shops, foundries, glass factories, ceramic factories, shipyards, etc., from 12.00 to 16.00.
  4. Configuration of rest areas: Establishment of appropriate air-conditioned areas in collaboration with the safety technician, medical professional and employee representatives.

Outdoor work – measures that can be taken to eliminate any heat stress of workers, regardless of their type of employment, include:

  • Providing appropriate headgear and skin protection.
  • Shading of break areas.
  • Design or select a shaded area or construct suitable shelters for work where possible.
  • Schedule work so that the most onerous work (for example, paving work) is completed during hours when temperatures are cooler.

Reduction of employment and/or cessation of work during the period from 12.00 to 16.00 for manual work performed outdoors. For example, work at technical and construction sites, construction sites, distributing and transporting products and items using two-wheelers, roller skates, etc. (delivery). As long as the suspension of distribution operations is applied, the option to order by the user directly from the store (to-go) may remain active, as well as the option to make delivery using personal vehicles.

The municipality of Athens is opening seven air-conditioned rooms on Monday to protect against the heat. These premises, as part of the measures taken to protect the health of citizens from high temperatures, will operate from 9:00 to 21:00 and as much time as needed:
