At a time when wages are not enough even to live on, price tags with discounts as part of the “housewife’s basket” introduced in 2022 have begun to disappear in supermarkets, and food prices have risen again.
Essentially, any product included in the “housewife's basket” list was required to receive a price reduction of at least 5%, which was maintained for 6 months and applied to approximately 1,500 product codes.
It is logical that prices for some of these products will increase with the end of the restrictions, as food inflation continues to be positive, despite the ministry's claims that most of these products were included in the subsequent measures introduced on March 1.
“Those products that were subject to the previous price reduction will not return to the prices that were before the introduction of restrictions, that is, 09/29/2022. They will also receive premiums. There were markups because raw materials have become more expensive. The measures are ineffective. For example, diapers were included under the additional measure and the prices have risen again. This ministry does not see them.“, said Apostolos Ratopoulos, President of the Greek Consumer Union.
