Beach bar in Rhodes ordered to remove sun loungers into the sea

Authorities on the island of Rhodes ordered the demolition of illegal structures into the sea and fined a beach bar in Agia Marina on Wednesday.

It's the same beach bar that caused a stir last year when video footage showed waiters having to swim or wade into the water to reach customers.

The raid on the beach of Agia Marina was carried out by teams from the Land Office, the Ministry of Finance and the Port Authority. During the inspection, authorities found 19 metal structures with sun loungers on them in the sea. Apparently, the raid was carried out after photographs and videos the waiters appeared in the water again.

Rhodes: scandal surrounding waiter serving sun loungers in the sea

A similar violation was discovered last year, on the same beach and by the same business owner. Authorities immediately ordered demolition reports to be issued. The beach bar was ordered to close, but was destroyed by bushfires in Rhodes in July 2023.

A year later, the businessman continued to work as… last year, as if nothing had happened, and violations of the law no longer apply. “When we say that there is order on the coast and on the beaches, we mean it! Those who commit illegal acts on the beaches will come face to face with us,” said Minister of National Economy and Finance Kostis Hatzidakis.

It is worth noting that the waiters themselves are not at all against such work, since, according to the owner, “they earn 3,000 euros per month plus 200 euros per day in tips.” Not surprisingly, the bar workers issued a joint statement that they were happy with everything and “Not work in slave conditions.”
