Greek seismologist warns of increased seismic activity

Seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos warns: “There will be increased seismic activity. No one can predict when or where something will happen.”

What areas are at risk? After Sunday's earthquake off the island of Kythnos shook Athens, a seismologist noted that after the period of seismic decline that we are experiencing, a period of seismic recovery will soon begin, quotes newsbeast.gr:

“The problem of earthquakes in our country is more general in nature, we experience periods of calm and outbreaks such as the period 2019-2021, followed by a period of decline from October 2021 to date. There is no doubt that we are in for another boom period. This is the law by which the planet works.”

Speaking about the areas with the greatest seismic activity, the seismologist noted that this “central Ionian region, Lefkada-Zakynthos-Kefalonia triangle, Corinthian and Dodecanese region, eastern seismic Greek arc”. “No one can predict when or where something will happen,” he explained. Speaking about Corinthiacos, Gerasimos Papadopoulos noted:

“It has many large active faults, including the Alkyonides fault, which caused the 1981 earthquake, and also the one that caused the Aegean earthquake. Major earthquakes occur there on average every 35 years, we are starting to exceed the average, so sooner or later we will experience one or another major earthquake again. There is great value in being proactive, following anti-seismic regulations and carrying out inspections.”
