The Grindavik volcano in southwest Iceland has erupted for the fifth time. Earlier, due to increased seismic activity in the area of the Sundhnukar craters on the Reykjanes Peninsula, authorities evacuated the areas of Grindavik and the Blue Lagoon.

It is the eighth volcanic eruption since 2021 on the peninsula, home to about 30,000 people, as geological systems that have been dormant for about 800 years begin to stir. Previous eruptions closed main roads and even destroyed many houses in the fishing village of Grindavik, leaving few residents able to return after being evacuated.

In an attempt to prevent further damage, dams were built to prevent lava from reaching infrastructure.
Icelanders often refer to their country as the “Land of Fire and Ice” to describe its eerie yet beautiful landscape of glaciers and volcanoes. It is located between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, which makes it extremely earthquake-prone.
