A sharp rise in temperature is expected from June 1

Despite the fact that there are officially two more days until the end of spring, summer seems to have already arrived. And although the temperature is not particularly high yet, it is expected to rise sharply in the coming days.

Temperatures are predicted to rise from next week: weather forecasters warn of 37-38°C, and in some areas it could exceed 40°C. A significant increase in temperature is expected from June 1, that is, from Saturday. In Attica it is expected to reach 29-30°C and in some places higher, and on Sunday it will rise even more, which will provide an opportunity to swim in the sea or walk in the mountains. Moreover, sea temperature has already reached 20°C.

Time to go to the beach: sea water temperature +20°C

Meteorologists and weather services agree that it will first wave of heata, which will last at least until the first week of June.

Temperatures will exceed 35-36C in many parts of Greece, and it remains an open question whether it will approach or exceed 40C next week. Tentatively, the highest temperatures will be observed in Thessaly, central Macedonia, Boeotia, Phthiotis, Aetolia, Peloponnese, Crete and the Dodecanese.

In Attica, it is possible that the temperature will reach at noon:

  • Saturday 1/6: 31°C
  • Sunday 2/6: 33°C
  • Monday 3/6: 37°C
  • Tuesday 4/6: 38°C

For Thessaloniki:

  • Saturday 1/6: 31°C
  • Sunday 2/6: 33°C
  • Monday 3/6: 36°C
  • Tuesday 4/6: 37°C.

Meteorologist Clearhos Marousakis said that in addition to the heat, African dust is moving again. According to him, starting from Saturday and especially from Sunday, due to the warm air mass coming from Africa, an increase in temperature will be observed: the mercury will rise to 33-35 ° C, and in some areas, for example in Boeotia, it is possible as well as up to 37 degrees. This heat will continue until the middle of next week before we move into more unsettled weather conditions.

However, the warm mass from Africa at the beginning of next week will also bring dust, but its concentration will not be dangerous. The western, central and southern regions of Greece will be affected mainly. For this heat wave we note the following. Observing the synoptic circulation of the atmosphere, it can be said that this is the result of a combination of a cold lake towards Italy and the central Mediterranean with higher barometric pressure in the east.

The above suggests that this is not a summer type warm intrusion in which high barometric pressure drives warm mass into our region. Therefore, this warm transport will be accompanied by clouds and African dust, and even instability in central and northern regions, which could change the temperature profile of some areas and lead to lower than predicted mercury values. Warm convection will likely peak early in the new week before slowing down and transitioning to more unsettled weather midweek.

From all of the above, we can conclude that this is generally a short-term warm transfer (3-4 days), without extreme events and with rather spring-like characteristics,

In the EMF forecast for Saturday June 1 the following is stated: “Clear weather is forecast throughout the country, and only in the afternoon hours will isolated clouds appear in the northern continental regions, and rain is possible in the mountains.

Morning visibility in the west and north will be locally limited. The wind will be variable, from 2 to 4 points, and in the Aegean Sea the southerly wind will blow up to 5 points. During the midday hours, sea breezes will prevail in coastal areas. Temperatures will rise slightly to 32-33°C on the mainland, 27-29°C on the islands and 30-31°C on Crete.

On Sunday June 2ndClear weather is forecast. Morning visibility in the west, center and north will be locally limited. The wind in the Dodecanese region will be northwest at a speed of 5-6 points. Over the rest of the country it will be variable, between 2 and 4, with sea breezes in coastal areas during the afternoon hours.

Temperatures will rise further and reach 28-31°C in the north of the mainland, 33-35°C in the rest of the mainland and 30-31°C in the island regions. Temperatures will be high for this season.”
