Travel to three countries for 8 euros

An ideal route for a weekend or holiday, you can visit Italy, Slovenia and Croatia by train for just 8 euros.

Euronews edition tells details. A new train route offers an exciting journey through three European countries – it was recently launched by Slovenian Railways. In just two hours the train passes through 8 cities of three countries.

The five-hour version of the route was closed more than 30 years ago, and now it has been revived again, so far only for the summer, until September 30. The cost of the trip will be a pleasant surprise for you – only 8 euros one way. The new railway line connects Italy, Slovenia and Croatia.

The route follows a railway line built more than 150 years ago, during the Austro-Hungarian Empire. You can make stops and change from one train to another.

The train departs from the northeastern Italian port city of Trieste, then crosses the border into Slovenia, where it stops at four stations – Sezana, Divaca, Pivka and Ilirska Bistrica. If you love cycling, be sure to stop at Ilirska Bistrica. Here you can rent electric bicycles and ride along forest paths overlooked by snow-capped peaks.

The train then proceeds to Croatia, where it stops in Sapjan and Opatija Matulja, after which it arrives at its final destination – Rijeka. After landing in Matulji, you can spend the night in the nearby resort of Opatija, with rococo villas and grand hotels overlooking the sparkling Adriatic. Rijeka is another port city with embankments lined with Habsburg-era palaces and a 19th-century theater designed by Gustav Klimt.

Trains operate daily in both directions until September 30. They depart from Villa Opicina station in the suburbs of Trieste at 7.50 am. At 8.54 the train stops in Ilirska Bistrica and at 9.54 it arrives in Rijeka. In the return direction, the train leaves Rijeka at 6.25 and arrives in Villa Opicina at 8.40.

A single adult ticket for the entire trip costs 8 euros, but you can buy separate tickets for each leg of the journey if you plan to change from one train to another. The route runs until September 30, but operators hope to make it permanent in the future.
