While collecting waste for recycling in Volos, a municipal cleaner accompanying a garbage truck received burns from a caustic liquid.
In a statement, the Magnesia Prefecture Local Government Association said, quotes publication magnesianews.gr:
“Unfortunately, the number of work accidents in municipalities is constantly increasing, and mayors are simply busy with impressive steps, such as the latest step by the mayor of Volos in the field of urban planning. Yesterday afternoon, our colleague with many children was injured while collecting garbage at a recycling center in the Neapolis area.
A woman accompanying a garbage truck while cleaning in the municipality of Volos suffered burns when a garbage can was emptied inside the garbage truck. A caustic liquid fell on her, which, fortunately, thanks to the hat she was wearing, did not get into her eyes. The substance penetrated her clothing and she suffered burns to her arms, legs and some of her face.
The experience saved her because she moved away very quickly when she felt it. Then after her co-workers doused her with water, they went to a nearby pharmacy and from there to the hospital where she was treated and of course her adventure would continue, including the plastic surgeries she would need.
The health and safety of working people is a big concern for municipalities. Instead of mayors dealing with staff recruitment, training, lack of mechanical equipment, removal of all dangerous old vehicles, awareness of citizens and control over how they remove garbage and which one has two bins (blue or green), and the requirement of financial support from the state for all of the above that we have: no staff, cars with damaged doors that the driver holds while driving, workplaces in mold 9 months after the flood (Spirer Archive, Adamopoulos building).
Our association requires compliance with all necessary health and safety measures for employees in all workplaces. We wish our colleague a recovery and a speedy return to us.”
