Organ donation from a 74-year-old man who died in a traffic accident


Relatives of a 74-year-old resident of Thessaloniki who tragically died in a traffic accident decided to donate his organs. Today, the man's cornea and liver were successfully removed.

The “gift of life” was given to patients in need of organ transplants by a car accident victim. The man was hospitalized in the 2nd intensive care unit of the Thessaloniki General Hospital “G. Pap,” but he “lost the fight.” The old man's relatives decided to donate his organs, and today the cornea and liver were successfully removed and transferred for transplantation.

The hospital administration expressed condolences to the man's family and warmly thanked its members “for their decision to give life to those in need at the most difficult moment for them.”

The operation to obtain donor organs was carried out with the participation of G.N.T. “G. Papanicolaou”, surgical teams of the Milan Clinic (Italy) and the PGNTh ophthalmology clinic. “AKHEPA”. The procedure was carried out under the overall coordination of the Hellenic Transplant Organization.

Thessaloniki General Hospital emphasized in its statement that it supports organ donation after the end of life and regards it “as the highest form of voluntary contribution to the care of humanity, fortitude and altruism.”
