Survey: How satisfied are Ukrainian refugees with life in Europe?


Half of the interviewed refugees from Ukraine fleeing the war in EUplans to return to his homeland.

The majority of respondents, 66%, are partially or completely satisfied with life in the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland – they are satisfied with the living conditions in their host country, according to the KIIS survey data. 26% of Ukrainians surveyed are dissatisfied with their living conditions.

Sociologists note that 7% already have citizenship of another country, and another 12% have submitted documents and are waiting for an approval decision on citizenship. 34% of Ukrainian refugees have not applied and do not plan to do so. But 45%, although they did not apply, would like to obtain citizenship of another country.

During the sociological study, the question was asked: under what conditions would refugees return to Ukraine? Most respondents talked about the normal operation of critical infrastructure (34%) and security (34%). This is followed by housing issues (26%) and completion of a full-scale invasion (26%). A slightly smaller number of respondents spoke about the possibility of finding a job (16%) and conditions for children to attend school/kindergarten (13%). At the same time, 50% plan to return to Ukraine. Sociologists believe that “this assessment is rather an optimistic scenario in the current conditions.”

The survey was conducted from April 20 to April 26, 2024 by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), commissioned by the public organization Center for Strategic Communications Ukrainian Refugee Survey Forum, writes publication “Correspondent”.

Using the online interview method, 801 respondents were interviewed – adult citizens aged 18 years and older who left Ukraine after February 24, 2022, living in Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic.

We previously reported that, according to Eurostat data, number of Ukrainiansenjoying temporary protection in EU, in some countries it is decreasing. As of March 31, 2024, 4,211,495 people from Ukraine had temporary protection status in the European Union. At the end of February, this figure was 4,234,595.
