Greece: record increase in flight bookings


Based on new data from the Greek tourism research and public institute INSETE, air ticket bookings are up 8.4% year-on-year ahead of the 2024 summer season.

However, the total number of air tickets booked was 27,025,200. According to the Air Data Tracker INSETE, China reported a whopping 276.8% increase in the number of air tickets booked to Greece (from 19,197 in 2023 to 72,328 in 2024), which contributed by new flights from Air China and Juneyao Air.

Bahrain also saw an impressive 70.3% increase, with 63,668 airline seats booked for this summer season, up from 37,376 last year.

As for the top 15 countries with the highest tourist flows to Greece this year, the UK leads the way with 5,484,349 air seats booked, up 5.7% from 2023. Next come Germany with 4,612,327 places, Italy with 2,419,035 places, France with 1,783,934 places. At the same time, the Netherlands with 1,153,312 places brings up the rear. top five.

The countries from the above list that recorded the highest percentage growth in airfare bookings to Greece were the USA (25.30%), Czech Republic (51.50%), Turkey (16.40%), Poland (14.30%) and Switzerland (13.90%). There was also a noticeable, albeit understandable, reduction in the number of air tickets from Israel by 21.60%, to 893,212 seats (from 1 million in 2023).

Athens International Airport recorded the highest number of bookings with 9,240,017, followed by Heraklion Airport in Crete with 3,743,165 air tickets, Rhodes with 2,878,009 air tickets, Corfu with 2,189,010 air tickets and Thessaloniki with 2,021,347 air tickets.

Greek airports with the highest percentage increase in arrivals are those in Araxos (31.3%), Mytilene (29.4%), Kalamata (25.80%), Athens (13.80%), Zakynthos (12.30%) ), Corfu (11.60%) and Chania (10.20%).
