Thessaloniki: electric bus tests completed

Scheduled testing of six of the 110 ΟΑΣΘ electric buses has been successfully completed, and the countdown is now on until they hit the road.

In May, electric buses will begin to operate on bus lines, mainly in western Thessaloniki, in particular No. 21 (Evosmos – Aristotelous route) and No. 29 (Polychni – Aristotelous route).

The tests, which began on April 6, were carried out on six new ΟΑΣΘ electric buses to check whether they met the specifications laid out in the supply contract. Each of the six buses was loaded with sandbags weighing a total of 2.5 tonnes, equivalent to a half-full bus. The tests ended after each bus had traveled 5,000 kilometers.

The electric buses are currently coming from the Greek state and in particular from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, which has held a tender for their purchase, and they will be transferred to the use of ΟΑΣΘ.

As it turned out, The buses not only meet the technical specifications, but also have more than twice the energy autonomy required. Thus, if according to the tender they should be able to travel at least 180 kilometers on a single charge, in practice buses can comfortably cover more than 300 kilometers.

The electric bus is 12 meters long and designed to carry 75 passengers. It takes approximately three hours to charge the battery. According to the terms of the tender, they must have a power reserve of at least 180 kilometers. Test routes have shown that the buses' autonomy comfortably exceeds 300 kilometers.

The vehicle has an air conditioning system, ventilation, and opening windows. The electric bus is also equipped with a ramp for access for people with disabilities in the middle door and a special place for a wheelchair. They are environmentally friendly and zero emission.
