“Greece will not send troops to Ukraine,” said the deputy of the Ministry of Defense

“Greece will not send troops to Ukraine,” Deputy Defense Minister Yiannis Kefalogiannis said on Tuesday after two Greek-American memorandums of cooperation regarding the deployment of Greek military personnel in the US military were overwhelmingly approved on Monday in parliament.

“It is obvious that these are not memorandums of cooperation that open a loophole for the entry of Greek troops into Ukraine, there are no loopholes under any circumstances.”– he said. “Thanks to this conclusion of memorandums with the United States, an additional channel of communication and cooperation is created between the armed forces of the two countries and the two states, which contributes to the strengthening of the strategic defense partnership between Greece and the United States,” – said Kefalogiannis.

On Friday, March 8, a memorandum of cooperation between the US Department of Defense and the Greek Ministry of Defense regarding the deployment of Greek military personnel in the US Army was presented to the Greek Parliament. “The purpose of the memorandum is to determine the conditions and implement the deployment of Greek military personnel in units of the US Army in Europe in order to meet operational needs and gain experience in a multinational interoperability environment,” – says the introductory report to the memorandum.

It also outlines the benefits to Greece as it will provide officers of the Greek Armed Forces with valuable experience through exposure to the operational organization and operations of the US Army. It also stipulates that Greek military personnel must possess the necessary rank, skills, education, academic and other qualifications required for the position, as well as a security certificate for classified information, documents and materials.

Will Greek ground forces go to Ukraine?

Greek media have already expressed doubts about the “lack of loopholes”since no one prohibits Greek military instructors, pilots or staff members from being invited as “consultants” and taking part in hostilities in Ukraine.

Moreover, the authors state that all commandos of the Greek army are pro-Russian, and the Greek army is obsessed with pro-Russian, Orthodox feelings.
