Marina Satti and "Zari": Greek participation in "Eurovision"

With the song “ZARI”, Marina Satti will represent Greece at the 68th Eurovision Song Contest, which will take place in Malmö, Sweden, on 7, 9 and 11 May 2024.

The song and video clip of Greece’s participation were exclusively broadcast on Thursday evening in a special show on state television channel ERT.

“Song “Zari” is a fusion of traditional, modern and ethnic musical elements, the lyrics speak of love but also risk, like a game of dice, and the imagery is a collage of various scenes and events from Greek life.

The video clip was shot against the backdrop of iconic Athens locations such as the Acropolis, Plaka, Monastiraki and the Herodos Attica Conservatory, as well as other characteristic areas including Omonia, Lycabettus, Rafina and Eleftherios Venizelos Airport. The director was Australian Zack Wiesel.

In a conversation with journalists, Marina Satti said that she chose this particular song out of five presented by the authors because she wanted to leave a special imprint in her memory.

“What kind of imprint do you want to leave? A ballad or a dynamic piece, so that there is energy, temperament? And in the end I always chose the latter. So we excluded the “softer” tracks, and I thought that this should be presented on stage,” – she said.

The song received mixed reviews on social media, with critics saying “Bollywood”, “super kitsch” and “indie chatter”. Others, on the other hand, praise the song for showing what Greece is like today.

The music of 37-year-old performer Marina Satti is popular in Greece and other countries, and is characterized by a combination of traditional Greek, Arabic, Balkan and Anatolian sounds with urban elements, rhythm and production.
