Poll: Greeks are tired of high prices and dissatisfied with the ruling party

The latest opinion polls show dissatisfaction among Greek society with the ruling New Democracy, just six months after parliamentary elections in the summer of 2023.

The Greeks, for the most part, do not agree with the policies of the ND, especially with “reforms” in the health care and same-sex adoption sectors, and do not seem to believe government claims that high prices are “import phenomenon”.

Intentions to vote for parties in the European Parliament elections

In voting intention in the European elections, the difference between ND and the second PASOK – which consolidates the difference with the third SYRIZA – is 16 points, with the ruling party recording a significant deterioration compared to previous results.

  • ND: 28.2%
  • PASOK: 12.2%
  • SYRIZA: 10.2%
  • KKE: 9.1%
  • Greek solution: 6.1%
  • Spartans: 2.3%
  • NIKI: 3.2%
  • Freedom rate: 2.5%

According to a public opinion poll conducted by ALCO commissioned by Alpha TV, a significant part of citizens associate high prices with a lack of control by the authorities.

Citizens are asking for additional measures to be taken against the constant rise in prices, which they consider an “internal problem.” 38% of respondents believe that there are insufficient control mechanisms, and 28% speak of a “pathology” of the Greek market. 87% of respondents are in favor of “new government support measures” to combat high prices, as they believe what it has delivered is not enough.

53% of citizens do not agree with the so-called “afternoon operations” in public hospitals, for which patients must pay up to 1,500 euros out of pocket. 41% of respondents answered that they agreed, 6% answered “I don’t know/don’t answer.”

It is worth noting how confusing the question is as it mentions “afternoon surgeries at a much lower cost than in private hospitals” while in public hospitals patients do not pay at all!

The survey shows a worsening picture of citizens’ satisfaction with the government. 45% of respondents said they were not satisfied at all, which is a significant increase from the same company’s previous survey.
