More than 3.5 million ticket checks in the metro and trams

Due to increased control over the payment of fares by passengers in the metro and tram, an increase of 173% in free riders was recorded compared to the previous year.

According to a company statement, the results “are a testament to the concerted efforts of ΣΤΑ.ΣΥ. to combat fine evasion during 2023, an effort that will continue with even greater force in 2024.”

In particular, 3,676,391 inspections were carried out in 2023 (with 81,451 confirmed violations) compared to 1,348,003 inspections in 2022 (with 52,188 confirmed violations) and 2,215,665 inspections in 2019 (63,037 confirmed violations).

“Last year, a comprehensive plan for the reconstruction of the audit body ΣΤΑ.ΣΥ was created and implemented,” says the company Σταθερές Συγκοινωνίες (ΣΤΑ.ΣΥ.), pointing out that in The following actions are being taken in this direction:

  • A. The audit team has been strengthened numerically, from 45 people in 2022 to currently number 122 people. Recruitment of new employees is planned for 2024.
  • b. Controllers are trained to communicate with traveling passengers (foreign tourists), since their role is not limited to ticket control, but also extends to service and information provision.
  • V. Controls have been extended throughout the metro and tram network, with a focus on entry and exit points such as the airport and the port of Piraeus.
  • At the beginning of November 2023 at the central stations groups have been created to prevent illegal passage of passengers through turnstiles. These are groups of workers supporting inspectors who stand in front of ticket checking machines and act as deterrent for passengers intending to travel without a ticketinforming and motivating them to arrange travel.

The phenomenon of “hares” is an issue that worries management OASA and ΣΤΑ.ΣΥ. Due to the frequency of the phenomenon, scenario tests are carried out, the purpose of which is to regulation of turnstile operating parameters, waiting time and transit combined with compliance with internationally recognized rules for the safe passage of passengers.

“The fight against fare evasion is a priority for us. We intend to reduce the number of offenses in 2024 through targeted actions and even more intensive monitoring,” says ΣΤΑ.ΣΥ management.
