Winter sales 2024: when will the premiere take place and how long will they last

Winter sales traditionally start in the second week of January. The premiere will take place on Monday, January 8th, and will end on February 29th.

On the first Sunday of winter sales, that is on Sunday 14 January, stores will be open. Stores are expected to operate at the recommended hours of 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

What consumers should pay attention to

The Greek Workers’ and Consumers’ Union advises citizens of their rights during discount periods to make shopping safer and smarter:

  • The original (previous) and new reduced prices for products must be clearly indicated at the points of sale of the goods. Each price reduction ad states the previous price that existed for a specified period of time prior to the sale period.
  • Previous Price means the lowest price applied by the Seller during a period of at least thirty (30) days prior to the discount period. If the item has been on the market for less than thirty (30) days, the previous price represents the lowest price applied by the seller during the ten (10) days prior to the sale season.

When carrying out discounts, in addition to indicating the old and new reduced prices for goods and services sold at a discount, it is also allowed to indicate the percentage of the discount. If the reduced price is provided for more than 60% of all goods sold, the presented The discount percentage must be indicated on the store window. In case there are different discount percentages for each product category, this must also be indicated on the store window or in any other commercial message (sign). The range of the percentage provided is indicated (“from …. % to …. %”).

STOCK or OUTLET stores are required to indicate on their signs:

a) old sale price (crossed out),

b) a new reduced selling price (larger or in a different color) to convey to the consumer a clear difference between the two prices.

If desired, it is possible to indicate the discount percentage within the store and in any other form. During sales periods, stores are required to display on signs all removed interim prices and in bold print the new reduced sale price, and in any other commercial messages to indicate only the words “sale”, “offers”.

If discounts, offers or any announcement of price reductions are inaccurate or misleading as to the discount percentage or prices, or the quantity of products offered at a discount or on sale, or involve any form of concealment or deception, the merchant a fine of up to 2% of the annual turnover and in any case not less than 20,000 euros is imposed. If a trader is fined again for the same offense within five years, the maximum fine increases to 4% of his annual turnover.
