Payment for purchases at street markets with bank cards: POS and IRIS terminals from the new year


Street markets will operate as normal from Tuesday 2 January 2024. At the same time, the use of POS terminals for accepting credit and debit cards will begin.

As stated in the statement of the Panattic Federation of Trade Unions of Street/Public Market Sellers ν Αγορών): “After the New Year holidays, all street market traders will be in their usual positions in all areas of Greece from Tuesday, January 2, 2024, to serve thousands of Greek consumers who have trusted us for many years, including for providing quality services, a variety of fresh products and maintaining good prices. With the arrival of the new year we welcome a new era of street markets with the universal use of POS terminals for accepting credit and debit cards, which is now mandatory and is for the benefit of all to optimally serve consumers and merchants.”

We remind you that from January 1, 2024 All vendors operating in street markets, fairs and Sunday markets are required to accept both card payments (debit and credit) and direct payment services by transferring money between bank accounts such as IRIS online payments.

Regarding sanctions in case failure to comply with the lawthen the corresponding decision of the ministry stipulates that for the period from 02/01/2024 to 03/01/2024 imposition of fines suspended in as an exceptionif it is proven that card acceptance terminals were purchased before January 31, 2024 and are awaiting installation.
