The government intends to speed up the legalization of same-sex marriage

The government is moving to accelerate initiatives to legalize same-sex marriage.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is receiving persistent proposals from his close associates, who believe that the government should take advantage of the favorable situation and not postpone the relevant legislation until later – after the European elections. Final the wording and provisions of the bill are given special weight and attentionsince the authorities will strive to formulate and submit to parliament a legislative framework that will maximize will limit the grounds for response.

Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis said: “There is a lot of confusion about what we will approve and what we will not approve. Let’s see what the government will answer, because it is my duty and honor to defend the legislative initiatives of the government, which does not want to “pouring water into wine.” I haven’t seen the text yet. Let’s figure out what we’re talking about.”

Children’s rights
It is expected that the Government will act in relation to the specific legislative initiative in a similar way as it did in relation to the Cohabitation Agreement. In other words, the authorities will strive to de-dramatize (or better yet, stop altogether) the debate and transfer the situation into the legal field. Allegedly, the rights of children of same-sex couples are currently being violated (children are discriminated against against children from “ordinary” families). The most striking example is that in the event of the death of a biological parent, the other parent has no rights and responsibility for the child falls on social services.

Speaking about the possible reaction of the church, government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis yesterday made special mention of the separation of powers. In fact The government will seek to make it clear that legalizing same-sex marriage is not a threat to the character of the traditional family or an attempt to change it, but rather is intended to fill a gap for vulnerable children.

Reaction

The corresponding legislative initiative has already been followed by a reaction within the New Democracy party, the most characteristic of which is the reaction of former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, who stated in an interview with Kathimerini that “will not vote for the relevant law“The church’s response, which has been particularly evident in recent weeks, has been alarming, especially as efforts to “settle things” appear to have failed.
