The growth of e-commerce in Greece is impressive: more than half of Greeks of all ages prefer to make their daily purchases this way, compared with less than three in ten who ordered online ten years ago.

Greeks’ familiarity with modern technology and the convenience it provides has made electronic transactions in certain categories of goods and services an everyday occurrence. And despite the fact that turnover is still low compared to purchases in physical stores, a significant part of consumers, and especially young people, increasingly prefer e-shopping. In the first three months of 2023 alone, according to the Hellenic Statistics Authority, 53.3% of Greek consumers made purchases online.

Compared to a year earlier, an increase of 4% was recorded, and compared to 2013 – by 104.8%.

The record holders for online orders were clothing, shoes and food delivery. For people who bought or ordered physical goods online, nearly eight in ten purchased clothing (including sportswear), shoes and accessories, and more than four in ten purchased food delivered by restaurants, fast food chains, caterers, etc. .

Almost three in ten (27.2%) purchased computers, tablets, mobile phones and accessories, while 25.3% purchased cosmetics, beauty and health products. From products ordered digitally:

  • 26.3% bought films or TV series,
  • 13.1% bought music,
  • 8.4% bought software for PC or other devices, including updates,
  • 6% – games for mobile devices, tablets, PCs or game consoles.

In terms of services, four out of ten Greek online shoppers chose Internet or mobile subscription, 32.3% – tickets to cultural events or recreation (cinema, theater, concerts, etc.), 22% paid bills for electricity, water supply, natural gas. etc. A small percentage, 11.8%, purchased tickets to sporting events.
