"Love to the animals" and impunity

In Greece in 2023 you will be treated more leniently if your dogs kill a person than if you kick an animal…

Mother of two children was torn to pieces by semi-wild dogs living in the neighboring yard, which entered her home. Charges brought against owner of killer dogs manslaughter with possible malice, but it is almost impossible to prove malicious intent in such cases, even if there is one. There are more than a few legal experts who believe that the dog owner will receive, at most, 3 years probation. After some time, he will walk free and smile, and the house next door will forever remain a reminder of the brutal death of a man.

However if you kicked a dog or killed it, then you would be accused in a serious crimeand the punishment for this, according to the latest changes in the Greek Criminal Code, can reach ten years in prison and a fine of up to 50,000 euros.

Meanwhile, regarding dog attacks on people, we will never know that perhaps some owners trained them to be aggressive because… they like to terrorize the neighborhood – behavior patterns that, unfortunately, exist and are even increasing.

Our publication has repeatedly noted the main problem of the state, which encourages dog owners to be irresponsible and careless whenever their four-legged pets attack other animals or people. One person’s “best friends” can be many others’ mortal enemies. The state, through its laws, allows the irresponsibility of their owners to go unpunished.

An attack on an animal is a criminal offense, but an attack by an animal that has an owner on a passerby is not a criminal offense.

Dog attacks in Greece have become a scourge for the country’s residents. Citizens who (or members of their families – elderly people, children) are bitten by rampaging dogs may also face serious problems with the law. Wherein attacking an animal is classified as a criminal offensebut an attack by an animal that has an owner on a passer-by is not a criminal offense. In fact, if you were attacked by a dog with the intention of biting you, but you kicked it in self-defense, you risk going to jail for a significant amount of time and could also be subject to a hefty fine. And this is not a joke, but the harsh reality of Greece in the second decade of the 21st century.
