New bridge will connect Greece with Turkey

Construction of a new Greece-Turkey bridge is expected to begin in 2024, which will improve road connections between the two countries.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in Greece and held a meeting with Katerina Sakellaropoulou at the presidential palace. The head of the neighboring state will then go to the palace Megaro Maximwhere he will have a meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

A delegation of Turkish ambassadors and ministers will meet with their Greek counterparts with the common goal of paving the way for an improved climate of cooperation between the two countries. One of the issues that cannot be ruled out and is likely to be discussed is a new cross-border road bridge in Evros, the construction of which, according to recent statements by Deputy Foreign Minister Costas Fragogiannis, will start in 2024.

It was the “Friendship Bridge” that became the main topic of discussion at the meeting of the joint project planning and monitoring committee (MESPE) in June 2023, when details were agreed upon to finalize the technical solution in order to complete the studies and begin construction.

The object will be cable-stayed bridge with three spans 811 meters long, of which 344 meters are in Greece. It will have two lanes in each direction, an emergency lane and sidewalks for each branch.

This is a particularly important project as it connects Greece and Turkey with the Pan-European Corridor IV (Berlin-Sofia-Thessaloniki) as well as Turkey (via the motorway Egnatia Odos) with Pan-European Corridor X and the Balkan countries, with direct economic benefits for Greece.

The project contributes to the national regional development policy and, in general, to the further development of relations between the two countries, Greece and Turkey.
