Greece’s railway network will be fully restored by 2025

Train route Athens-Thessaloniki will resume work V in full from December 15, 2023said Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras at the 7th Thessaloniki Summit on Monday.

One section of the rail route was recently damaged by Hurricane Daniel and has since been served by buses. Minister Staikouras reported that Railway services from Athens to the northern borders of the country will be resumed on December 10.

The government’s goal is to fully restore the entire railway network by 2025, including remote control and signaling systems, after a tender is announced in early 2024, he added. The total cost of damage to the national rail system due to recent extreme weather events is €200 million, covered by the Recovery and Resilience Fund EU.

However, temporary repair work is already underway, which will cost 14 million euros, Staikouras added. A full restoration project will follow after a tender is announced in early 2024. The Thessaloniki metro will begin operating in the second half of 2024, noted Staikouras (they promised by the end of 23. Now by the end of 24?).
