Poll: Single men smell stronger than married men

According to a study published in the medical journal Frontiers in Psychology, if you’re having trouble dating, it may be because single men are often “fragrant” with their natural scent, and women have the ability to distinguish between the smell of married people and the smell of single men.

Researchers from Macquarie University in Australia have proven that single men smell stronger than married men. “It is an advantage for women to be able to recognize pheromones indicating suitor status (married/single) and ultimately avoid the advances of ‘unmarriageable’ men,” the researchers write.

Pheromones – the smells we emit thanks to our hormones – play a large evolutionary role in attracting the opposite sex. Thus, single ladies prefer to give up perfume because they are convinced that their natural one will help them find a partner.

A study found that single men have more testosterone. Scientists haven’t been able to pinpoint why there is a difference in odors, but study author Mehmet Mahmut told Newsweek that hormones play a role in “mate-seeking behavior,” the New York Post reports.

Researchers asked 82 heterosexual women to smell the sweat from the T-shirts of 91 men—45 married and 46 single. They gave participants clean white T-shirts and asked them to wear them for 24 hours to maximize perspiration, as this area absorbs “a significant amount of sweat.” Having collected the clothes, they were given to the participants in the experiment – the women smelled them and then looked at the photos of the corresponding men.

According to the results of the evaluation, “single men smelled stronger than married men.” Additionally, “the faces of single men were rated as more masculine than the ‘relaxed’ facial expressions of married men.”

“We know from previous research that higher testosterone levels are associated with stronger body odor. Potentially single men have higher testosterone levels,” the study concluded.
