ΕΛΣΤΑΤ: the number of Greek residents experiencing acute food shortages has increased


According to the survey results ΕΛΣΤΑΤ6.6% of the population said they were moderately or severely food insecure, and 1.5% said they were only severely food insecure (on the global standard FIES scale).

The rates of moderate and acute food insufficiency in previous years were 6.0% in 2021, 6.1% in 2020 and 8.0% in 2019, while for acute nutritional insufficiency they were 1.5% respectively, 1. 6% and 1.5% (graph 1).

Eurostat’s verdict: “One in ten Greeks does not have access to nutritious food.” What does food shortage mean? A household is considered moderately or severely food insecure if at least one household member reported that:

  • during the previous 12 months before the survey, he had to skip meals,
  • ate less than he thought he needed,
  • went without food
  • I was hungry but didn’t eat
  • went the whole day without food due to lack of money or other resources.

A household is considered to be experiencing acute food shortage, if at least one household member stated that during the previous 12 months preceding the survey, they went an entire day without eating due to a lack of money or other resources. The table below shows the prevalence of food insecurity among the entire population based on the FIES scale.
