Election passions in Nafplio: the mayor threw dog excrement at an election competitor

On September 27, the Nafplio City Court considered the lawsuit of mayoral candidate Dimitris Orfanos against the mayor of Nafplio Dimitris Kosturos. The plaintiff accused him of throwing dog excrement from his car window at his election rival’s house to show what a “shit” he was.

“The mayor threw feces at him to show him that he was crap. And so 16 times,” the famous lawyer Alexis Kougias, defending the mayor, said at the trial.

During the trial, Kosturos’ lawyer Alexis Kougias made revelations, saying that the current mayor of Nafpli threw excrement (and did it 16 times) near Orfanos’ house to show him “that he is a piece of shit.”

The atmosphere of the trial was quite aggressive from the very beginning, the publication reports. Prototheme, as the courtroom and hallways were filled with candidates from Mr. Orphanos’ Vision of Creation party. Mr. Orfanos, who was in the courtroom with three lawyers, lost his temper at one point when Mr. Kosturos’ lawyer, Alexis Kougias, asked a question to a witness. At this, Mr. Orphanos stood up and shouted, striking the bench in front of him with his hand.

Violent emotions flared up in the hall, those present began to shout during the meeting, and the chairman asked to close the meeting for a few minutes. The police squad on duty at the courthouse intervened in the situation.

After a break, when the police presence was increased, the chairman of the court asked not to stand in the courtroom. In response to Mr. Kuia’s new question to the witness Mr. Orfanos, the Vision for Creation Party candidate shouted loudly from his seat to the chairman of the court and the criminal lawyer. At this point, the chairman asked that all those seated be removed, and the debate continued only in the presence of lawyers and a witness, as well as strong police guarding the entrance to the courtroom.

In his statements, Alexis Kougias spoke about the atmosphere of terror from the Orphanos faction. “In an atmosphere of terror on the part of the mayor, the matter was not even discussed. The subject of the trial was the conclusion of whether the behavior of Mr. Kosturos, which consisted in throwing a pot of a plant from what we buy for mayor at the door of a mayoral candidate children, a plastic coffee cup, some dog scraps and some rotten fruit, and this happened 16 times, threatening the life, physical integrity and property of Mr. Orfanos. It was only thanks to his testimony that all this fell apart, because he did not dare say that threatened the life and physical integrity of the mayoral candidate. This was an exaggeration. I limited myself to questioning the witness Mr. Orfanos and refused my own questioning,” Kougias said at the beginning.

The criminal lawyer continued: “Very important things have come out of this whole trial. Mr. Kosturos’ position was: “The one who is now my opponent in court was my friend since childhood. He was my family lawyer, he was my sister’s lawyer, he was my lawyer at DEYAN, and there, because he did not show up for the court hearing and we had to pay 350 thousand euros to the municipality of Argos, I did not even condemn him for disloyalty and did not expose him during the election period.

Despite accusations that he was the recipient of a forged will, I did not bother here either. Although he knows what kind of person I am, and no one has accused me of financial impropriety. But ever since he announced his candidacy for mayor, he started talking about my personal ethics. Not a day passed without him insulting my honor and reputation. However, I did not want to criminalize municipal elections and as a means of expressing disapproval I chose to throw litter when I knew that my actions were being filmed, I wanted him to see that I was doing this because I wanted to show him that he himself litters what he does against me.”
