Only 10% of vehicle owners in Thessaly will receive damage compensation

“The flooding of the Thessaly Valley means an increase in product prices due to the large number of goods produced there due to the current inability to continue producing them,” Yiannis Hatzifeodosiou, president of the Athens Chamber of Commerce, told ERT.

The official commented issue of providing compensation by insurance companiesnoting that if throughout the country the share of vehicles insured against natural disasters reaches 20%, then in Larissa, Volos, Trikala and Magnesia (Thessaly) only 10%.

Products from four prefectures will disappear from the market in the coming days. The official even calculated that the problems that will arise in Greece in the next period will be very large.

Speaking about compensation for damage caused to vehicles, commercial and private, he noted that those who have insurance against natural disasters will receive the money.

The problem, according to Mr. Hatzifeodosiou, is that in Thessaly only “10% of car owners of destroyed vehicles will be able to receive compensation from the company

“Each vehicle, in order to receive compensation, must have the appropriate official document from the fire service, which states exactly what happened,” he added.

Applied to residential buildings and in this sector the percentage of insured also does not exceed 10%. “Real estate that is deposited in a bank is necessarily insured (for example, if you took out a mortgage on your home and are still paying it). But we don’t have many houses in rural areas that are insured,” emphasized the President of the Chamber of Commerce.

The issue, he said, is not only the restoration of enterprises, but also support for workers. “The damage in the Thessalian Plain appears to be in excess of 300 million euros, which insurance companies will have to pay,” said Mr. Hatzifeodosiou, pointing out that 80% of the compensation concerns large companies.

Speaking about the need for insurance, he explained that in Florida and California, usually 80% of victims receive compensation from insurance companies, in Germany – 75%, and in Greece – only 10%.
