Greece: drones and sensors will help in "prevention" forest fires (video)

On Thursday, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced the government’s plans to use drones and temperature sensors in forests to prevent forest fires.

How writes Reuters, dry weather, wind and heat this year have led to large-scale forest fires in Greece – in the northeastern region of Evros, the fire has been raging for thirteen days in a row. Kyriakos Mitsotakis declared in Parliamentrecalling the July heat and strong wind:

“While we were better prepared than ever, we were facing an unprecedented combination of incidents.”

He said the authorities intend to acquire more than 100 drones to monitor forest fires in real time and install temperature sensors at archaeological sites and high-risk forest sites, as well as hire 500 forest scientists and 1,000 firefighters:

“More than 100 drones will monitor vulnerabilities, including using artificial intelligence, so that we can immediately know about a fire outbreak when it happens. Temperature sensors, cameras in all high-risk archaeological sites and forests. We need better satellite images , we will subscribe to advanced satellite heat sensing systems that will provide us with real-time information about the development of the fire.”

Ecologists accuse the Greek authorities of spending more on extinguishing fires than on preventing them. Evros fire called the worst in history EU. He took lives at least 20 people, destroyed houses and destroyed protected forests. Dozens are reported arrests people who are suspected of deliberate arson.
