Table olives: an ominous forecast for the new season

Olive growers are in despair at the unprecedented barrenness of olive trees, reaching 90%.

The barrenness of trees bearing varieties of table olives, as indicated by the Panhellenic Association of Producers, Packers and Exporters of Table Olives PEMETE, is recorded in P.E. Halkidiki, Kavala, Magnesia, Fthiotida, Etoloakarnania, Phokis, Arte, Larissa, etc.

In the main agro-industrial complexes of the SE Halkidiki and Fthiotida, the economy of which is largely based on the cultivation and sale of olive fruits of the above varieties, there is simply a “dreadful” situation.

Recall that the main volume of table olives is the Chalkidiki variety (80% of the total crop mass) and the Amfissa variety – 75% of domestic production (out of 4,000 olive farms spread over 130,000 hectares). The phenomenon of infertility (failure) this year is approaching 90%, which is likely to cause a very significant blow to the Greek economy.

PEMETE, whose members represent more than 85% of domestic table olive processing and more than 96% of Greek exports of the product, considering the importance of the product for the entire industry and the country (Greece is the second exporting country in the world with an annual export value of 600 million euros), is worth on the side of the Greek producer and processor of olives.

The Association’s leadership indicates the size and criticality of the problem. And while looking for a solution, it raised this pressing issue at the highest level, making a request to the Prime Minister’s office asking for immediate support for the affected enterprises.
