Russian Foreign Ministry: BRICS closed the road to most Western countries

The reason for the refusal of Western states to join the BRICS will be sanctions, Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Ryabkov said at a press conference following the summit.

He explained that one of the criteria for the admission of new members to the BRICS will be that they do not impose sanctions against any member of the organization:

“If one of the Western countries refuses to apply sanctions against any of the BRICS and submits an application, the association will consider it.”

Fifteen more countries have so far applied to join the bloc, Ryabkov said, and Kazakhstan and Belarus will be the priority for the next expansion.

Recall that the BRICS initially included Russia, China, Brazil, India, South Africa. At the summit, the organizations decided that from January next year to the block will join Iran and five other countries. As a result of the discussions, it was decided to invite six states to the alliance: Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Ethiopia, Iran, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates. They will become full members of the BRICS from 2024, said South African President Cyril Ramaposa. According to him, the alliance will not be limited to one phase of expansion.

If the condition of non-imposition of sanctions is indeed designated as one of the criteria for membership in the BRICS, then this means that the member countries will not impose sanctions against Russia in the future. Or they will have to leave the association.
