The fire got close to the monastery of Kliston (Holy Dormition Kleyston Monastery of the Theotokos), as a result of which the flames engulfed the territory of the monastery, and firefighters could not get close enough to rescue the 50 nuns and novices trapped in the fire.

According to the police officers who arrived at the monastery, after inhuman efforts, all 50 nuns and novices were taken out and are now in good health.

A special EMAK group also worked on the spot, which assisted in the release of nuns from fiery captivity.

The fire engulfed the houses of the village of Khasia. Fili District Mayor H. Pappus is urging the authorities to use aerial means as fire fighting is not available from the ground.

Earlier, a message about the evacuation of the residents of Fili in the direction of Ano Liosia was transmitted by telephone “112”. According to citizens at the scene, the fire is burning west of Parnita and has spread to Khasia.

The message from service 112 was transmitted to the residents of Fili shortly after 12:40 on Tuesday. Residents of Fili are asked to evacuate in the direction of Ano Liosia.
