3 million people left Athens


Nothing less than 3 million passengers took advantage of the ferries in mid-summer (July 1 to August 15) this year from the three main ports of Attica: Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio. At the same time, an increase of 6.58% was recorded compared to the same period in 2022.

According to official data, from July 1 to August 15 this year, 3,140,906 passengers were transported to/from the three largest ports compared to 2,946,747 passengers last year. Recall that in July last year there was the last major increase in the cost of tickets for passenger ferries, as a result of a jump in the cost of marine fuel.

This year, the growth trend registered in July continued in the first half of August as a whole, mainly due to an increase in passenger traffic from the port of Piraeus.

In particular, the data of the Ministry of Shipping show that from 1 to 15 August this year, the number of passengers served by three ports – Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio, amounted to 1,118,445 passengers compared to 1,071,516 in the corresponding period last year, which means an increase of 4, 37%.

The largest increase in the number of passengers was registered in Piraeus, which amounted to 5.96%, while there was a slight decrease from the other two ports: by 0.11% in the port of Rafina and 2.80% in the port of Lavrio.

Also from the port of Piraeus, the number of transported cars increased by 5.3%, trucks by 6.31% and two-wheelers by 1.76%. An increase was also recorded in the port of Rafina (1.41%, 0.22% and 0.34% respectively), while, on the contrary, there was a decrease in the transport of cars and trucks in the port of Lavrio (-2.80% and -3 .09%) and an increase in the number of two-wheelers (10.80%).

As noted, in July, the passenger traffic from the three ports also increased and was actually better in percentage terms than in the first ten days of August.

In particular, in July, the number of passengers (2,022,461 people) who arrived at the ports of Piraeus, Rafina and Lavrio (on round-trip flights) exceeded 2 million people, an increase of 7.85% compared to the same month last year. The largest increase in passenger traffic was observed in the Argosaronic Islands, with 452,680 passengers carried in July this year, compared to 389,908 in July 2022. This is 16.1% more than last year.

The port of Rafina also showed an increase in passenger traffic: from July 1 to July 31, 2023, 349,330 people were transported, while in July 2022, respectively, 332,741 people, i.e. growth was 4.99%. The port of Lavrio recorded an increase in passenger traffic in July by 7.57%: 134,720 compared to 125,241 in the corresponding month of the previous year.
