The new Ilioupoli Tunnel, the construction of which is about to begin, will be a breathtaking project for Attica, which will fundamentally change the road map of Athens and greatly facilitate the movement of citizens.
GEK TERNA-ACTOR CONCESSIONS-AVAX is engaged in the construction of the tunnel, which will connect Katechaki Avenue with Vouliagmenis Avenue. Once the large-scale construction project is operational, drivers will be able to travel from Katehaki Avenue to Vouliagmeni Avenue (and vice versa) in 10 minutes, when today, especially during peak hours, it takes at least half an hour.
The tunnel will start from the military camps of Sakket (στρατόπεδα “Σακκέτα”) and end at Vouliagmenis Street (near the Ilioupoli metro station). According to the plan, it will consist of two separate branches, one for each traffic flow. Its length will be 3 km, 3 lanes for each traffic flow.
The project will connect the southern suburbs to Mesogio and El. Venizelos. At the same time, faster access to the Elliniko area will be provided. The “Vertical Road Axis” will connect the southern and northern suburbs of Athens, contributing to the partial unloading of Kifissos Avenue. Vulyagmenis avenue will also have a positive impact, as the traffic lights will be removed and the avenue will be turned into a highway.
