Lithuania and Latvia: NATO must strengthen the security of the eastern border due to "Wagner"

On Tuesday, June 27, Latvia and Lithuania called on NATO to strengthen border security, given that the Wagnerites are moving to Belarus and may establish a new base there.

How recalls publication BB.LV, the head of “Wagner” Yevgeny Prigozhin, in accordance with the previously concluded agreements through the mediation of President Lukashenko, arrived in Belarus on Tuesday. After the rebellion of mercenaries, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered to go to Belarus to those Wagnerites who do not want to sign a contract with the Russian Ministry of Defense and continue military service.

Edgars Rinkevics, Latvian Foreign Minister, during his visit to Paris called for an assessment of this situation, taking into account the abilities, demonstrated these mercenaries. Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis also said that the speed with which the Wagnerites were moving towards Moscow, covering hundreds of kilometers a day, shows that it is necessary to strengthen the defense of the Baltic countries:

“The borders of our countries are only hundreds of kilometers away from this activity, so it could take eight to ten hours for them to suddenly appear somewhere in Belarus near Lithuania. This creates a more unstable, unpredictable environment in our region. We must take it very seriously to the defense of the Baltic region”.

Rinkevich believes that the arrival of Wagner in Belarus should be considered in the context of the NATO summit and all discussions on defense, containment of threats and the necessary decisions to strengthen security on the eastern flank.

During his visit to Vilnius on Monday, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said the country was ready to permanently deploy a brigade of 4,000 soldiers in Lithuania. Landsbergis pointed out to his French colleague that Paris could help with air defenses.

Earlier, our publication said that the new base of the Wagnerites near the northern border of Ukraine caused concern and in Poland.
