Head of the GUR of Ukraine: "ZNPP demolition plan approved"

The head of Ukraine’s military intelligence, Kirill Budanov, says that the situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant has never been so serious – the plan to undermine it has been fully developed and approved.

The head of the GUR said this in an interview. British edition The New Statesman, warning of a dangerous escalation and Russia’s completion of preparations for a terrorist attack:

“The situation has never been as serious as it is now.”

When asked by the publication whether the Russians had made a decision to blow up the power plant, Budanov replied:

“The plan is fully developed and approved. The only element that is missing is the order to act. Then it can happen in a matter of minutes. Technical means can be used to hasten the disaster.”

According to Budanov, the station’s cooling pond was mined by Russian troops. Without cooling, nuclear reactors can melt down in ten hours to 14 days. He is convinced that the Russian Federation will be able to increase the voltage in the power lines at the station, which will lead to a nuclear accident in the lower part of this time period.

The publication writes that Ukrainian intelligence has established that Russian troops have moved vehicles filled with explosives to four of the six power units. It is unknown if the International Atomic Energy Agency was granted access to these units during the June 15 visit.

According to the head of the GUR, the order to carry out a terrorist attack at the ZNPP could be caused by the defeat of Russian troops on the left bank of the Dnieper – Russia considers the creation of a nuclear disaster zone as a safeguard for the further advancement of the Ukrainian defense forces.

There is also a risk, Budanov says, that the Russian Federation could carry out an attack on the plant with a radiation leak as a “preventive measure” to stop the Ukrainian offensive and freeze the front line in its current form.

In Ukrainian government circles, writes The New Statesman, there is disappointment that the reaction of the world community to the destruction of the June 6 Kakhovka hydroelectric power station was so muted that it could provoke further use of “scorched earth tactics.”

On June 20, Budanov stated that there was a threat of an explosion or an accident at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, since the invaders additionally mined the cooler. On June 22, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Russia was probably preparing to carry out a terrorist attack at the ZNPP, which could lead to the release of radiation.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky in yesterday’s evening address notedthat he discussed threats at the ZNPP with US President Joe Biden, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Polish President Andrzej Duda on Sunday: “I brought to my partners the information that we, our intelligence, have about the Russian scenario with the mining of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which is obviously approved for the terrorists. We must take – all together in the world – concrete steps to prevent any radiation incidents.”
