Athens Airport Now Charges Drivers Waiting for Flight Passengers

The Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” has installed an automatic system in the arrivals area that collects a fee of one euro per minute

The purpose is to collect payment from car drivers waiting for arriving passengers on domestic or international flights.

According to the newspaper, citing a report by the state newspaper ERT, topontiki noted that there are no provisions for those who are waiting for passengers whose flight has been delayed, which is a common occurrence, or when passengers are forced to wait for a delay in the arrival of luggage, or even in case of loss of luggage.

One euro per minute

Prices will reportedly be quite high, only the first 10 minutes will be free. Gradually raising the price, the management of “Eleftherios Venizelos” decided that the cost after the first quarter of an hour was 5 euros. After twenty minutes, the charge will be 1 euro per minute. If the driver exceeds the hourly stay, then the car will be removed from the territory by a crane.

The cost increase will also affect minibuses that serve travelers daily from parking lots outside the airport, as now the cost of travel and stay for 10 minutes for the 3rd time in one day is 5 euros.

Airport management comment

Payment will be made at the exit. To those who complain, the airport authorities say: “There is always a solution for parking, short or long term, where prices are cheaper and the first ten minutes of stay are free. This change was made to avoid overcrowding in the arrivals and departures area.” So, according to reports, the management commented on the criticism.
