Poll: 84% of Ukrainians believe that there are no problems with the Russian language in the country

The vast majority of Ukrainian citizens, as shown by a survey of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, do not experience harassment because of the Russian language.

The survey was conducted from May 26 to June 5, 2023. It is worth noting that a similar survey conducted by KIIS in May 2022 showed a slightly different result – then 93% of Ukrainians believed that the problem was far-fetched and Russian-speaking citizens were not subject to harassment and persecution due to the use of the Russian language.

In the latest poll, 85% of residents of the east deny the existence of a problem with the Russian language. Among the residents of the south, 81% share the same opinion. In the country as a whole, only 8% believe that Russian-speaking citizens are subject to systematic harassment and persecution (in May 2022, this figure was 5%).

Among those who communicate only in Russian at home (or mostly), 81% believe that there is no harassment or persecution, while 13% believe that they meet.

In a sample of 984 respondents, 32 identify themselves by nationality as Russians. Among them, only 6 people see harassment because of the Russian language, and 25 say that there are no such problems.

The survey was conducted by telephone interview based on a random sample of mobile numbers. 984 respondents over 18 living in all regions of Ukraine were interviewed. The sample did not include residents of territories that were temporarily not controlled by the Ukrainian authorities until February 24, 2022 (Crimea, Sevastopol, certain areas of Luhansk and Donetsk regions). Those who went abroad after February 24, 2022 did not participate in the survey.

As a rule, the statistical error of such a sample, under normal circumstances (with a probability of 0.95 and taking into account the design effect of 1.1), did not exceed 3.4% for indicators close to 50%, 3.0% for indicators close to to 25%, 2.1% – for indicators close to 10%, 1.5% – for indicators close to 5%. In war conditions, a certain systematic deviation is added to the indicated formal error. In KIIS, I note quotes “UP”: “We believe that the results obtained still remain highly representative and allow us to fairly reliably analyze the public mood of the population.”
