Serbia deploys military units near the border with Kosovo

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić put the country’s army on full alert and ordered units on Friday to move closer to the border with Kosovo after violence erupted around newly sworn-in Albanian mayors in northern Kosovo.

The new chairman of the Serbian Progressive Party and Minister of Defense stated, writes Novosti that the situation in Kosovo and Metohija is very difficult:

“I expect them to be in their positions in the next few hours. We are not playing war, but Serbia’s red lines are known. Deployment is now underway in accordance with the current situation.”

Vučić’s order came after Serbs in northern Kosovo clashed with police who were trying to secure access to the workplace for newly elected Albanian mayors. It all started after the controversial elections in Kosovo on April 23, which the majority of ethnic Serbs boycotted. Belgrade calls on the KFOR contingent to ensure order in Kosovo.
