Panic Button app for women experiencing violence in Greece

In Athens and Thessaloniki, a digital mobile phone application is launched to support women facing domestic violence called Panic Button.

The free app is downloaded to a smartphone and activates the service by pressing a button that sends a text message (SMS) to the police operations center. The application contains the necessary information to find the user.

The application can be provided by the Hellenic Police Departments, the Domestic Violence Directorates in Athens and Thessaloniki, and the Network Advice Centers under the General Secretariat for Demographic and Family Policy and Gender Equality under the Ministry of Labor in Attica and Thessaloniki.

To receive the application, a woman needs to fill in the following information: digital code, social security number (AMKA), full name, mobile phone number, exact address and floor, home call name, history of violent incidents, perpetrator’s possession of a weapon, victim’s children and/or pregnancy, history of addiction and/or mental illness.

The panic button was introduced on March 23, 2023.
