Turkey to vote for Greece’s bid for ‘non-permanent member of UN Security Council’

Turkey will vote for Greece’s candidacy in elections for non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and his counterpart Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Monday.

In return, Athens will support a Turkish candidate for the post of Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the two ministers said.

Dendias and Cavusoglu had a 20-minute face-to-face meeting on the sidelines of a donor conference on Turkey and Syria in Brussels early Monday morning. This is the first meeting between the two foreign ministers since the earthquake in southeastern Turkey, with Athens immediately providing rescue assistance and Dendias traveling to the neighboring country to see the extent of the disaster.

The rapprochement, also called “earthquake diplomacy,” is the first after almost a year of constant aggressive rhetoric and threats from Ankara against Athens. It is also worth noting that after the earthquake, violations of Greek airspace by Turkish fighters and reconnaissance aircraft stopped. Apparently it hasn’t happened yet…
