Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced an increase in the minimum wage. From April 1, it will be 780 euros gross* and approximately 650 euros net, which is 9.5% more than now.
The head of government noted that the introduced increase is at the upper limit of the country’s capabilities. He recalled that in 2019, the salary was 650 euros.
The government’s decision confirmed “bold up” scenarios for private sector workers and will take effect April 1. The Prime Minister notedquotes CNN Greece:
“I have no illusions. I know, we know that wages are still low in our country and inflation is pushing them even harder. I hear about this all the time, especially from young people who are struggling to make ends meet. This is a new The increase, of course, will not solve the problem, but it certainly provides a very important relief and, above all, indicates our intention to raise wages, both in the public and private sectors.”
Mr. Mitsotakis stressed that the time has come to “support workers with a generous pay increase”, reap the growth dividend that everyone is reaping fairly:
“I want to emphasize that the final amount that has been agreed is at the upper limit of our capacity. However, it is within the capacity of the businesses that – I want to remind you – have been so strongly supported by the Greek government during the pandemic.”
The report highlights the fact that workers in the primary and service sectors are the ones who will see the most significant difference in their wages. According to the IOBE report, these sectors have the highest percentage of those earning the minimum wage.
It is worth recalling that before the entry into force of the memorandums in Greece, in 2011, the minimum wage for workers under the National Collective Labor Agreement was 751.36 euros.
