Minister of Labor: Minimum wage will not reach 800 euros

Labor Minister Kostis Hatzidakis is making it clear that the base minimum wage will not reach 800 euros.

In an interview with Mega TV, Mr. Hatzidakis noted that “the minimum wage will not reach 800 euros”: “The minimum wage will not have an “8” in front. 800 euros is an increase of approximately 12%. Inflation was 9.5% against the forecast of 5%, GDP grew by 5.6%. All this must be weighed. We must balance between the capabilities of enterprises, and on the other hand, enterprises must also see the increased needs of employees due to the introduced inflation. This will be reflected in the significant increase that will be given.”

Earlier, government spokesman Giannis Ikonomou said that the corresponding announcements on the minimum wage would be made within a week, and the new amount would come into force on April 1.

Minimal salary

According to KEPE, 585,000 workers receive the minimum wage, based on data from the ERGANI information system. It follows that a quarter of those employed in the private sector earn the minimum wage.

Allowances
However, the increase in the minimum wage will also affect unemployment benefits and a number of benefits paid OAED. In particular:

  1. Unemployment benefit. Today, the monthly unemployment benefit is 438 euros. The allowance is 55% of the daily wage of an unskilled worker. In contrast, the special long-term unemployment benefit, which is 200 euros per month, will not increase, as it is a fixed amount.
  2. Unemployment benefit for the self-employed. Today it is 438 euros, and from April 1 it will rise to 462-475.2 euros.
  3. Special end of unemployment benefits. It is equal to 13 days of unemployment benefits.
  4. Suspension benefit: equal to 20 daily unemployment benefits.
  5. Special assistance after three months of being registered for unemployment. It is equal to 15 days of unemployment benefits, i.e. today is 262.65 euros. From April 1, it will vary from 277 to 285 euros.
  6. Special seasonal facilities. The builders collect 70% of the 37 times the daily wage of an unskilled worker, which is 825 euros today. With an increase, they will collect from 870 to 895 euros.
  7. Special benefit for pregnancy and childbirth: in the amount of the minimum wage.
  8. Unpaid wages due to the insolvency of the employer: up to 3 wages are paid. For workers who are not regulated by an industry agreement, up to 3 minimum wages are paid, i.e. 2139 euros today and from 2256 to 2320 euros from 1 April.
  9. Compensation for vocational school students (EPAS).
  10. Compensation for internship programs, etc.
  11. Payment for public benefit programs.
