The US is concerned about the explosive atmosphere in Greek society due to the disaster in Tempi

The US is concerned about the explosive climate created in Greek society after the Tempi train disaster, as Ambassador Ioannis Tsounis said in a speech on Greek television calling for a split: “I think that such an event should not be used to divide the nation, although the nation will take time to heal your wounds.”

The Greek media believe that the US intervention is due to the fact that there are more not interested in government support (they consider Mitsotakis a “burnt card”) but are interested in seeing the country enter a period of social and political unrest. Especially at a time when the situation with the war in Ukraine is at its most critical stage, and Alexandroupoli is the main port of entry for American reinforcements.

This statement followed meeting and public photo session of D.Tsunis with the former president of “ND” A.Samaras, even before the Tempi tragedy, which deepened anger against the government and sent clear signals for the US effort. This meeting, and then a joint public appearance at a time when New Democracy is trailing by as much as five points in the preliminary polls and flirting with the opposition, now takes on new meaning.

Since Samaras clearly shared his position on the Tempi situation and recalled that he signed a railway safety contract in September 2014, which was never fully implemented, the Americans are looking for some points of stability in the system, which is in a highly unstable position.

What D. Tsunis said

“This is a tragedy. I don’t know what else to say. This is an unspeakable tragedy. From the bottom of my heart, I express my condolences to the families of the victims.

President Biden, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and I expressed our condolences and, most importantly, our desire to do everything possible to help the Greek state and the Greeks.

As a father, I was shocked by this event, especially because there were so many young people among them.” – said the US ambassador.

Mr. Tsunis further stated: “It will take time for the nation to heal its wounds. I don’t know if the parents of these children will ever be able to come to terms with this, but with God’s help, our prayers and the support of the nation, I hope the pain will be eased. I believe that will be undertaken necessary steps to ensure that this never happens again.”

“I don’t want to focus on looking for responsibility for this national tragedy. I believe that such an event should not be used to divide the nation. We ourselves have gone through a similar situation. It is necessary to reconsider the safety of trains around the world. This is not a problem that concerns only Greece, this is a huge challenge for the whole world.”– concluded D. Tsunis.
