EU: 7-year corporate bankruptcies record in Q4 2022


Many different tales can be told to the population, fabricating statistics and joyfully reporting on the growth of the economy and the welfare of the European Union, but there are economic indicators that are difficult to disguise. This publication is about the bankruptcy of enterprises.

As for the registration of new enterprises, in the fourth quarter of 2022 it slightly decreased: by 0.2% compared to the previous quarter. Overall, in all four quarters of 2022, business registration rates were higher than in the pre-coronavirus period, 2015-2019.

Transport and storage are at the center of the crisis. If we look at bankruptcies by activity, in the fourth quarter of 2022, an increase in the number of bankruptcies was recorded in all sectors compared to the previous quarter. The largest increase in the number of bankruptcies (+72.2%) in Q4 2022 (compared to the previous quarter) was recorded in the transport and storage sector, followed by accommodation and food services – +39.4% and education, health, social work – +29.5%.

Compared to the pre-pandemic fourth quarter of 2019, the number of bankruptcies in the fourth quarter of 2022 was higher in most sectors of the economy. The largest increase in the number of bankruptcies compared to the fourth quarter of 2019 was recorded in the accommodation and catering services (+97.7%) and transport and storage (+85.7%).

The number of bankruptcies was lower only in three sectors of the economy: industry (-17.6%), construction (-9.2%) and information and communications (-4.0%), which proves that these sectors are firmly entrenched and weathered the challenges period.
