Can Greek schools withstand a strong earthquake – expert’s opinion

Professor of geology and disaster management Efthymios Lekkas was asked if Greek schools are capable of withstanding a strong earthquake.

Recall that Mr. Lekkas was in Turkey as a luminary expert after very strong earthquakes that leveled entire regions of the country, leaving thousands of dead in their wake.

Regarding Greece, the seismologist noted: “Each school has its own characteristics, its own resilience and its own vulnerability. In Greece, within a program that we started a few months ago together with the Ministry of Education and Civil Defensewe will spend x-ray examination (scanning) of all schools in the country. That is, each school will have its own “passport” and its recommended action plan. “Earthquake preparation” will be carried out without fail in educational institutions. In every school, children should be educated.”

At the same time, the expert clarified that if there are schools that do not meet the conditions for conducting classes in them, then they will be “demolished” without hesitation, since the children’s institution has a “huge responsibility” for the lives of those who attend it. “In addition, the question has been raised about inspections that will henceforth be mandatory in public and private buildings,” he added in an interview.

Remember February 6th in Turkey and Syria was hit by a powerful earthquake. There are tens of thousands of dead. Responsible for the “flimsy” infrastructure “called to the carpet” and even reportedly arrested.

Konstantinos Spirakos, Associate Professor of EMP, expressed his expert opinion about whether Hellas will withstand a 7-point earthquake.
