A former lawyer for Salah Abdeslam, a key figure in the 2015 Bataclan attacks, is taking on the defense of Greek MEP and former Vice-President of the European Parliament Eva Kylie in the Qatargate investigation, in which she is suspected of corruption and bribery.
Sven Marie, a Belgian criminal lawyer, told Politico magazine on Monday that he will replace Andre Risopoulos, who has represented Kylie so far.
“I am taking over,” Sven Marie characteristically says in his message.
The news that he is no longer handling the case was confirmed to Politico by Kylie’s former lawyer Andre Risopoulos, but declined to explain why.
“I’m taking control,” wrote Marie, who has represented many high-profile clients but became best known when he took on the defense of the most hated man in Europe, especially in France and Belgium, Salah Abdeslam.
Abdeslam, the only survivor of a group that sowed death in November 2015 in Paris with attacks in various parts of the city, was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Even before that, Sven Marie was called the devil’s advocate because he took clients like Fuad Belkasem, who recruited young people for ISIS.
Marie is known in the Belgian media for being outspoken and has made it clear that he is “not a lawyer who only wants to defend victims”.
