Homophobic reaction to the ballet in Patras: "Mozart" in female form, and a kiss between two primas

There was no limit to the indignation of parents who brought their children to the festive production of the ballet Mozart, in which the main character is a woman.

The performance is performed daily exclusively for the DIPETHE schools in Patras, and the artistic director Luca Thanos has invited dancer Maria Kikina to play the lead role. The dancer in the role of “Mozart” marries another woman, kisses her, exchanging vows of love. It is this fact that both partners are same-sex that angered many parents.

The Peloponnis newspaper reported that the parents reacted strongly, leading the school principals to believe that classes should not attend this children’s play. In fact, there were also teachers who disagreed with the choice of a woman for the role of Mozart.

The director of the school complex in Patras, speaking anonymously, told the publication: “Mothers call us, anxiously and annoyed, asking what they should say to their children who have seen the performance when they are asked why Mozart is a woman? And “how can one woman marry another?” We are in a very difficult and awkward situation. And how to properly explain this delicate topic to children 6 and 8 years old? As you understand, the model of the family that children have as a model is different. Unless this is done consciously, precisely in order to change these norms in the eyes and minds of children, in the name of bisexuality and homosexuality…”.

Speaking to Peloponnisos, DIPETHE Patras Artistic Director Lukas Thanos said the only reason for choosing a woman for the role was the difficulty of finding a male dancer. And that there is no need to look for any “pitfalls” in this.
