A tornado in the Czech Republic: five people died, devastated settlements, hundreds of wounded, people trapped in the rubble of buildings – these are the results of the rampant elements.
An emergency has been declared in the affected areas, rescuers are providing emergency assistance, and people are being searched under the rubble. According to the police in the South Moravian Region, which borders Austria and Slovakia, hundreds of houses have been destroyed, and thousands more were left without electricity. Public transport and railways are paralyzed.
The wind speed reached 267-322 km / h, it literally razed to the ground part of the Czech town of Hodonin and some villages – Luzice, Moravska Nova Ves, Grushki, Mikulčice. Gedvika Kropachkova, an ambulance worker, tells AFP reporters:
“Unfortunately, we can confirm that there are casualties, but I cannot tell you the exact number.”
Several dozen people were hospitalized, 10 are in critical condition. The tornado caused huge damage, the affected areas resemble bombed-out areas. According to Deputy Mayor Marek Babis, the elements tore off roofs from village houses and overturned cars, uprooted trees and power transmission poles, “treated” them with hail up to 10 cm in diameter. About 78 thousand Czech households were left without electricity.
Military and rescue services from Austria and Slovakia came to the rescue of the Czech Republic’s rescuers. The authorities provide victims with an initial compensation of about $ 2,700.
